The City of Surrey has the largest RCMP detachment in the country, and it grows larger every year. Police harassment, brutality, and police-involved deaths—especially among Indigenous, racialized, homeless, and low-income communities—are the rule, not the exception.
House Keys Not Handcuffs
Homelessness continues to rise across the province as incomes can’t keep up with skyrocketing rents, governments refuse to build non-market housing, and vacancy rates plummet. Under these conditions of neoliberal austerity, a homeless encampment emerged along 135A Street in Surrey, close to shelters and meagre social services.
People Power Not Police Power
Collective resistance to police power in Surrey is urgently needed, and the stakes are high. To respond to this need, we are initiating a campaign rooted in a politics of abolition; our ultimate goal is to abolish the police and the systems of power and domination they uphold: capitalism, colonialism, and white supremacy.
